Welcome

Taking the Gospel message to the streets in an easy to organise public event that attracts people easily, sows seeds, and changes some lives forever!

Gary Seithel | East of England Co-Ordinator

We are a Christian organisation that is based in Brentwood, Essex.

On the Move was set up by Martin and Gina Graham in 1997 who ran their first free street barbecue in Canterbury and discovered a whole new way of reaching people.  It was effective and fun.  They wrote about it in their book Sizzling Faith (Amazon link below)

A big street barbecue brings the atmosphere of a beach mission right into your high street.

We encourage and resource local churches in the East of England to bring the love of Jesus to the streets.  This has been so effective for many years now and we want to involve as many churches, and towns as possible.

What happens at a typical On the Move barbecue?

Shoppers in the high street hear a band playing.  They smell onions cooking. There is a carnival atmosphere. One of our team  asks, ‘can I invite you to a free barbecue?’  Who doesn’t love free food ?

Shoppers are given a free burger or sausage in a bun in an area of the High Street set out with chairs, tables and gazebos.  Food and music make for a relaxed party atmosphere.  People are treated like party guests and welcomed by team members who get conversations going, and make individuals feel listened to.

Everyone serves people on the street with care, courtesy and good humour.

We partner with local churches (of any denomination) to make it happen.  Church volunteers become part of our team, giving out invitations, serving food, playing or singing in the band, or as table hosts, chatting and befriending.  Often conversations will end up being about faith, personal issues and sometimes end with prayer.

Doing an On the Move barbecue needs planning, care and most of all, prayer.

We also partner with the Local Authority responsible for the town where we are running the event.  The authority give permission based on our track record for scrupulous food hygiene standards and training.  Ahead of the event all volunteers are trained in food storage, preparation and serving from our accredited trainers who are Level 2 Food Safety in Catering qualified.  Our food standards trainers also attend on the day of the event to oversee the catering side of the operation.

In addition to food standards street evangelism needs careful thought and prayer.  It is recognised that the he primary agent of mission is always the Holy Spirit.  However it is essential for the partner church to recruit table hosts who are mature in their faith, and capable of sensitively handling conversation with people of no faith, another faith, or atheistic.  They should also be able to handle a pastoral conversation where someone is sharing a concern or problem.  In addition to careful selection, table hosts will also receive training so that they are confident in their role in a street mission environment.

Our aim is to help you run a wonderful street mission that your town will be happy for you to run again.

Our ministry seeks to play a small part in doing what Jesus asked his followers to do, to take his message of freedom in life, and freedom from death, to the ends of the earth. OK, we don't go quite that far, just to the towns in the East of England. But we do go, and we do share the hope that we have over a cuppa and freshly cooked food.
